2014 New Home Features

The National Association of Home Builders recently surveyed home builders from across the country to see which features they were most likely to include in their single-family homes this year.

According to the results, builders feel that their buyers are looking for convenience, livability and energy efficiency.

The most popular features for new homes built in 2014 are:

A walk-in closet in the master bedroom
Low-e windows
A separate laundry room
A great room

Homebuyers are interested in energy efficient features such as Energy-Start appliances and programmable thermostats.

Builders surveyed also listed the following popular design features:

Granite countertops
Double sink in kitchen
Linen closet
9 foot ceiling heights
Front porch
Outdoor lighting
Patio

Now is a great time to buy a new home and take advantage of the new style trends and construction techniques. It's officially spring and a great time to come out and see our new homes!

Tips for Moving Day!

Moving is a necessary but often dreaded part of buying a new home.  With a little planning ahead you can make your move easier and quicker than you may have realized!

Here are some of our favorite tips for moving day!

  • Create a moving notebook. Use this to keep a checklist of what needs to be done, important phone numbers and dates. There are printable moving checklists online that can be used as a guide.
  • Find out what you can give away. The less you have to pack the better. Start giving away unused items to local charitable organizations, libraries or schools.
  • Create a first night box with everything you will need for the first night and morning in your new home before you've unpacked. Keep this box with you and make sure it gets in your new house first.  Other materials you will want to have on hand are cleaning supplies and tools.
  • Before disconnecting your electronics, take a photo so you can remember how to put it back together.
  • Ask friends for boxes or check local food and retail stores.
  • Use clothing, towels and rags to wrap delicate items and take up space in boxes. Leaving boxes with too much space will cause the contents to move around and possibly break or scratch.
  • Label boxes with what room they should go to and the contents. Color code with tape or stickers to make room placement easy.

Prepping Your Yard For Spring

The official first day of spring is only 6 days away and it's time to begin prepping your yard for
flowering plants and summer gardens.

Here are a few ways you can start preparing your yard for Spring and Summer's bounty!

  • Apply a pre-emergent in early March to stop those pesky weeds from coming back up
  • Rake - remove the dead grass stems that have built up over the winter. They will prevent moisture and sunlight from getting to the healthy grass.
  • Sharpen the blade on your mower for a clean cut.
  • Overseed patches where the grass is thin due to heavy traffic or poor conditions.
  • If you fertilize, only use a light amount in the spring months. If you fertilized in the fall your yard is still getting the benefits from that application.

Spring Forward

Despite the lingering winter weather, this weekend the clocks will spring forward to adjust for
Daylight Savings Time.

This change is often more difficult for people than in the fall where we gain an hour of sleep. However both adjustments upset our body's natural sleep rhythm and can require some time to reset.

To help make the transition a little easier, here are some tips you can use to prepare for the time change.

1. Start Going to Bed Earlier - In the days leading up to Daylight Savings Time go to bed a half hour early to begin preparing for the lost hour of sleep.

2. Limit Caffeine Intake - Try to restrict caffeine intake after the lunch hour.

3. Adjust the Lights - Expose yourself to natural light early in the morning and dim the lights an hour before going to bed at night.  This includes the light emitting from electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets.

4. Wind Down - Give yourself a one hour wind down time which means not exercising or eating too close to bed time. Limit electronics usage and noise levels in the home.
