Honoring the Lost

This weekend is the unofficial kick-off to summer. Many will be celebrating with backyard BBQ’s, trips to the lake, family picnics or fireworks. In the midst of these celebrations don’t forget the real reason for Memorial Day – a time set apart to remember those who gave their lives fighting for our freedom.

According to The Memorial Day Foundation, over 1 million Americans made the ultimate sacrifice while defending our country. Our service men and women overseas continue to fight for all the United States stands for in places like Afghanistan and Iraq.  Other members of our military serve in peacekeeping missions across the globe in places like Kuwait, Turkey, Egypt, South Korea and Honduras.

So this Memorial Day take a moment to remember the lives lost and sacrifices made by our military and their loved ones.  Take the time to watch a parade, thank a service member when you see them out or contribute to one of the many foundations set up for surviving family members of fallen soldiers.

“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.” – President Harry S. Truman
